If you have been working tirelessly to make your SEO work to increase your organic traffic, leads, and the number of new visitors to your site, you may not understand why none of it is working. Not only this, but the more you spend on your SEO efforts, the more frustrating it may be to see that nothing seems to be working. You may feel as though you are doing everything that you are meant to be doing, and yet, your efforts are not coming to fruition. What Is On-Page SEO?

Before I deep-dive into common mistakes made in regard to SEO, it’s important that I establish what on-page SEO is specifically. On-page SEO is the act of enhancing the quantity and quality of site visitors to a website or a blog from search engines through on-page optimization techniques. SEO aims at increasing the rankings of websites in search results, on different search engines, rather than directly attracting customers through advertising. SEO is a collective term for many on-page optimization techniques used to improve the popularity of a site on the internet. This is usually done by optimizing the site content, keyword usage and overall web design. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is not just about ranking your site high in Google, but it is also important to provide your users with fresh content that makes them stay on your pages and return to your site later. Search engines are highly technical and constantly monitor for changes in their search algorithms. When a user types in a search phrase, the result list is constructed based on an analysis of this phrase's most frequently searched results to form its final ranking factor. The on-page SEO should include relevant and fresh content, keyword-rich content, titles, meta tags, as well as internal and external links.


Mistake #1: Keyword Stuffing

In the world of on-page SEO, keyword stuffing is one of the most common practices used by those who wish to dominate google search results. It is also known as "Spamdexing". However, there are limits to what is acceptable, and those limits are laid down by the search engines, which you must comply with in order to enjoy any amount of success with your campaign. Keyword stuffing does not work because it may lead your site to be regarded as spam and therefore may be hidden from results altogether. Instead, make sure you have the right keywords and that you use them properly instead of filling your webpage with numerous keywords which bring little to your campaign.


Mistake #2: Targeting the Wrong Keywords

The right keywords are, of course, the right way to go. By using the wrong keywords in your sales pipeline, you are misdirecting the algorithm and therefore not putting all chances on your side. For example, let’s say that you were attempting to publish a piece to gain more customers for your patent attorney bureau. By using the wrong keywords, you could end up seeing your text be categorized or received as a text on how to write a patent rather than one that comes out as a result of searching for an attorney ready for hire. Therefore, when creating SEO content, your first step should be to be clear about the goal of the text. Is it to create more traffic to your site? If so, what product are you selling, and is it represented accurately in the text? Are you looking to get more clients for your business, and if so, is your text about the benefits of hiring a provider for these services, or how to do these services by oneself? This will be a make-or-break factor in your conversion ratio.


Mistake #3: Competitive, Yet Vague Keywords

The third common mistake made when it comes to SEO is to focus on using competitive keywords rather than using keywords that will bring you the exact demographic you are trying to access. Let’s say you were a wedding planner in California. Your aim with your SEO efforts is to bring in more customers to your landing page through an SEO blog. Your content ranges from articles surrounding how one can make a wedding less stressful, or the common mistakes made by grooms and brides to be. However, none of your texts include SEO keywords for your location. That's key! By using keywords that are competitive, you are on the right track. However, by leaving out key information and keywords on your specific business, such as your location and your specialty, you are reducing your likelihood of reaching the right target for your services.


At the end of the day, working around SEO is a difficult task if you are new to the world of optimization. Between the specific tips and tricks to make your page rank higher and knowing when the algorithm changes in or against your favor, it can be difficult to always be on top of things.
